When I ended the cool down, one of the women asked what we were doing. I was surprised at first because this is how I have taught since I started teaching Belly Dance in 2007. This is how I explained it.
My orientation to Belly Dance is influenced by other refined exercise or spiritual practices I have studied; Yoga, Tae Kwon Do, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Reiki and Feng Shui. She said she thought Belly Dance was only the shaking of the hips.
Belly Dance originated in Northern Africa once known as Kemet. If you look at photographs of hieroglyphs you will see that spiritual practices of this place included a supernatural awareness of the the functions of the body and energy field. Women were looked upon as a sacred part of the life giving process including teaching activities such as cultivating crops, building communities around temples of the goddesses and of course childbirth.
Belly Dance, based on my studies, is a way to open the chakras and move energy in or out of your energy field. This concept is based on what I know about the refined exercises I mentioned above, and my understanding of energy medicine.
So when I close a Belly Dance class with a silent exercise that encourages participants to follow their hand down to the middle of the heart center, I have several intentions. I hope to share a non-verbal message to recall the way energy moves through DNA. I am giving each woman the opportunity to activate innate memories of the Priestess that might lie within your sub conscious memories and in the minerals in your body.
Today I set the intention to create a space where you can awaken the Priestess within you! Or, if you are already in touch with your goddess self, gain greater access to her MAGIC!
